Blast Furnace Carbon Brick Description

Carbon refractory materials have high thermal conductivity, low molten iron wettability and permeability. Since 1950s, furnace bottom and furnace hearth of blast furnaces large amount adopt carbon refractory. After the adoption of carbon refractory, the service life of blast furnace significantly prolonged, furnace bottom or furnace hearth leakage accidents are seldom happened. But with the enlargement of blast furnace and the adoption of strengthened smelting technique, the working condition of furnace lining refractory is severer and severer, so there is higher requirement on furnace lining material. In late 1970s and 1980s, new type blast furnace bricks are developed, such as impregnated high density carbon bricks, semi graphite carbon bricks which adopts electric calcined anthracite as raw material, semi graphite SiC carbon bricks added with a little amount of silicon carbide, micro pore carbon bricks added with pure silicon, silicon carbide, alumina, high temperature pressing carbon bricks, and self roasting carbon bricks which are made by vibration molding and are roasted during roasting furnace and operation.

Blast Furnace Carbon Brick

The raw material of blast furnace carbon brick is usually anthracite, which normally contains 5% ash content and 8% volatiles. Anthracite should be heat treated in vertical electric furnace to eliminate ash content and volatiles, so carbon bricks will have good high temperature volume stability, good oxidization resistance and mechanical strength at high temperature. Other raw materials used for carbon bricks production are artificial graphite and special additives(metal and oxides powders) etc. Heat treated dehydrated coal tar pitch is usually used as binder of carbon  bricks.
 
Blast Furnace Carbon Brick Applications  

Blast furnace carbon bricks are usually used at furnace bottom, furnace hearth and furnace bosh. Carbon bricks are not easy to be eroded by molten slag or molten iron, besides they also have good high temperature strength and high temperature volume stability, so the service life of blast furnace lining can be significantly prolonged.
